Teff Grass Hay - Saltlick - 12-23-2013 So it seems I just wasted 110 dollars on a small load of Teff hay since my goats won't eat it. I wasn't able to try out a bale first since it was so far away and I had it delivered. I'm wondering if I just let them go a couple of days and don't give in and give them anything else if they'll just give up and eat it. Any ideas? The big one is fat and I'm not worried about him, but the middle one is still growing and the oldest one is the bottom goat and afraid of the others and is on the thin side already. RE: Teff Grass Hay - Dave-Trinity-Farms - 12-24-2013 Might try to get a bale or two of alfalfa and mix em and then wean em off the alfalfa But realistically, they should eat it when they get hungry. RE: Teff Grass Hay - Saltlick - 12-24-2013 Thanks Dave. There was just some nice orchard grass hay for sale but it had a little alfalfa in it so I didn't want to take the chance. So a little here and there shouldn't hurt them right? RE: Teff Grass Hay - Dave-Trinity-Farms - 12-25-2013 Im still feeding straight alfalfa to my boys. I just make sure they have their mineral mix with the AC in it and give them a treatment once a week in some grain. RE: Teff Grass Hay - Saltlick - 12-25-2013 Aha, no wonder Legion is so big! Django is still light and smallish. I always thought that after a year they shouldn't get any alfalfa. Well, we'll see what happens. They did end up eating it yesterday. What I have heard from several packers is that their general rule of thumb is to supplement with Alfalfa & or grain in appropriate rations until 3-5.5 years and then again after 8 years old. RE: Teff Grass Hay - Dave-Trinity-Farms - 12-25-2013 What we really need to see is some concrete evidence on UC. We all know the improper balance is bad but the more I research, the less likely it seems alfalfa is a cause of UC. But until that day comes, Ill still do what I am doing with the AC. But come this summer, I have a new source of some freaking nice alfalfa grass mixed hay and will buy a few tons of that for the boys. I still kinda feel like I am dancing with the devil feeding straight alfalfa. Better to error on the side of caution. RE: Teff Grass Hay - Saltlick - 12-26-2013 I know my goat got UC from grain for sure.... |
