I've done that kind of hiking before. For me the secret was footwear. Either have some awesome high boots, all tucked under and tied tight, or just wear old jogging shoes and be happy to have cold, wet feet. There is no in between. Normal hiking boots let the snow in and keep it in since they're "waterproof".
Also at this time of year, keep a sharp eye out for squach tracks. Remember, you may be the first human to go down that path since fall, so who knows what you'll find!
